Chapter  1:  The Case of the Sensational Scent

Shaving Lotion:  Put  shaving lotion on the table and let the kids doodle with it.

Smell Pots:  Put several different scents onto a cotton ball and have the kids  identify the smells.

Chapter 2:  The Case of the Cosmic Comic

Hero Discussion:  What makes a hero?  What qualities does a hero have?  Ultimate hero?

List of Impossible Tasks:  raise one eyebrow, wiggle your ear, touch your nose with your tongue, tickle yourself, sneeze without closing your eyes, lick your own elbow

Race Cars:  Race several cars on a track.  Who’s the fastest?

Comic Strip:  Definition, examples (Peanuts, newspaper, comic books)

Possible comic strips:  The 3 Little Pigs, a sporting event, Christmas, birthday party, bedtime routine

Chapter 3: The Doughnuts
Make a “sandwich” advertisement.  Design a front side and a back side.  Connect the two with string and link over your shoulders.

How do you make doughnuts?  Fill in the blanks to complete the doughnut recipe.

Make doughnuts.

Drink some coffee.

Labor-saving Devices: Walk about the house and find things that save you time.

Jewelry Hunt:  Search the house to find the missing jeweled bracelet.

Chapter 4: Mystery Yarn
Eat some fried chicken.

How big a ball of string or yarn can you wind in 5 minutes?

Yarn Pictures:  Use a piece of felt for the background.  Cut various lengths of yarn and create pictures.

Chapter 5: Nothing New Under the Sun (Hardly)
Play the game Mousetrap.

Learn to play a song on the recorder.

Read the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Eat some cheese/crackers.

Chapter 6: Wheels of Progress
Discussion:  What makes a town?

Eat All-American foods:  fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, root beer floats.
